Many of you will know Murray Chapman, from First Contact Chefs – he’s behind the ‘ A Passion to Inspire’ initiative.
Like many of us, he’s concerned about the impact Covid has had on those who work in Hospitality.. not just those already in post but also those students emerging into the workplace this year with, at best, severely limited options.
He has developed a proposal to help and support all students who have finished their College training in 2020. Many may well have already lost their first jobs within the industry due to current circumstance and it’s essential that we pull together to do our best to support and inspire these young people.
With many businesses still on hold for the time being and interviews and placements not expected to start in earnest until early Autumn, ‘A Passion to Inspire’ (APTI) is keen to help Level 3 and above students that have left college in 2020 find a career path within the Industry.
The plan is for potential workplaces to forward appropriate job vacancies and their own Covid 19 code of conduct direct to APTI. The vacancy will remain internal and will not be published elsewhere.
APTI will then contact the 164 colleges it is connected to and build a new database for lecturers that would like to be involved to support their students. They will then receive a confidential list of up to date positions both for Kitchen and FOH specifically for students that have recently graduated.
Lecturers will be asked to internally advertise these positions – make contact with applicants to assess their future plans, bearing in mind the different circumstances and extra travel that may be required for them to successfully apply for each post, and then forward interested candidates to APTI
The young people will be asked to fill out a First Contact Chefs Covid 19 questionnaire and can then access APTI’s CV training .. and once their details have been checked the application will be sent on to the client .
Once the client has received the applicants details it will then be their responsibility to contact the applicant to progress things, perhaps via an interview or work trial. APTI can, at this point, engage with the applicant on interview techniques if required.
The offer of a position and subsequent negotiation is solely between the applicant and client – there is no cost to the applicant for this service other than travel to the interview or trial, and no cost to the client during the whole process – as long as the applicant’s start date is before the 12th October 2020 (to be reviewed in line with government guidelines).
